Hospice Volunteers:Volunteers for Home Hospice play a very important role in non-medical care. Volunteers are the heart of hospice. These men and women give their time and talents in order that the mission of Home Hospice may be realized. Some are friends or relatives of former patients, while others simply believe in the hospice concept and wish to participate in creating the caring community necessary to facilitate the hospice philosophy. Our volunteers come from all areas of the three counties we serve and from all walks of life. Some serve in the area of their profession; others are like family friends. All are a vital part of our Home Hospice Family. Volunteer Categories: |
|
| Patient and Family
Services These volunteers offer the same kind of assistance a friend or close neighbor might give. They perform a variety of tasks such as sitting with the patient when the caregiver needs to be away; cooking; light housekeeping; babysitting; reading to the patient; running errands; listening; caring. The type of service performed is determined by the strengths and desires of the volunteers matched with the needs and wishes of patient and family. These very special people provide patients and family members with support and comfort during this significant time. |

| Professional
Volunteers These volunteers serve Home Hospice in the area of their chosen profession. They may be doctors serving as Medical Directors or Board Members; attorneys serving as advisors for end of life decisions or on our Board; hair stylists providing haircuts and services to patients; massage therapists giving that comforting touch to those in need... There are as many possibilities as there are professions. |
|
| Bereavement
Volunteers These volunteers offer support to the grieving family members for at least 12 months following the death of their loved one. They are directed by the Home Hospice team and may provide supportive visits, phone calls, cards, etc. Volunteers in the areas of Patient and Family Services and Bereavement are asked to attend our Volunteer Training known as "Life Awareness/Death Awareness" which consists of approximately 30 hours of instruction by hospice experts including staff members and professionals from our community. These training sessions are conducted twice a year in Grayson and once a year in Cooke. Office volunteers receive on-the-job-training. Inservices for all volunteers are offered throughout the year on topics of interest. |

Office Volunteers Office volunteers offer support to the staff of Home Hospice by assisting with tasks in the Home Hospice office. These include filing, computer entry, mailings, errands, memorial acknowledgment, typing, and other tasks. These volunteers also assist with special events and community fairs. |
| Auxiliary Volunteers This is a support and fund-raising arm of the Home Hospice organization. They conduct Light Up A Life annually, provide services such as Volunteer Appreciation events, Dr.'s Day events, and help further hospice education throughout our community. In Grayson County they meet monthly, September-May, on the second Thursday at 11:30. In Cooke County, they meet two times a year at a place and time to be announced. Please call the office for more information. |

| Food Committee Volunteers
The Food Committee is a group of people willing to provide an occasional meal for a patient and their family on an as-needed basis. Volunteers' names will be place on a list and called on a rotating basis by the Food Committee Chair. The specific needs will be given and once an available volunteer is secured the meal will be prepared and delivered to the Home Hospice office for delivery to the patient/family by the direct patient care staff. The Food committee has operated for many years very successfully in Cooke County and is always open to new volunteers. |
|
Bear Hugs Committee members sew a teddy bear made from a material that holds a special memory for the Hospice patient or their family. The volunteer must be willing to work within a relatively short timeframe. No special training is required. |
|
| Legacy Project Volunteers
